Engaging patients to improve health-related decisions and health equity

Patient and public engagement in research has demonstrated that engaging patients and other stakeholders in research helps to frame the research question so that it is meaningful. If patients understand and value research, they will be more actively engaged in learning healthcare systems and management of their medical conditions. Community-engaged research should involve the diversity of patients impacted by a disease, along with their family, friends, and care providers. When research is co-developed with patients through community-academic partnerships, the research results provide solutions to the most pressing healthcare problems and reduce health disparities to support learning healthcare systems and health equity.
